We visited Nickel, this is not pollution, this is an environmental disaster…
The “city” consists of nickel mines and factorys, there is black dust on everything, the soil is either black or yellow. The air tastes and smells of sulphur.
We tried to enter into the actual compound but since we did not have any official permissons 3 heavily equipped and scarred unfriendlylooking russian security guards told us “no photo, no shot”
Welcome to Nickel:
Yes, it is black snow:
The road on the norwegian side:
The border control Norway/russia:
We entered russia on monday the 16th may at 16:00. Without the “doverennost” (power of attorney) for the car we could not have entered. We were thougroughly controlled.
After two days without iternet we are now online again, the story continues. We left Kirkenes to go as far north as you can in Norway, we ended up at Oscar II chapel, basically where the road ended and Barents sea.
Oscar II chapel was unforunately locked, but we did not realise that and pulled the door and it opened, we manaded to close the door properly.
We also signed the guestbook.
Now we are leaving Kirkenes and probably go for a quick view at the coast, then Nickel in Russia…
69 NOK… But it is from the world’s northliest brewery…
Entering Norway from Finland is travelling back 1 hour in time. We are now in Kirkenes, an industrial town on the shores of Barents Sea.
This is the border between Finland and Norway.. not much
We are coming up to norwegian border, snow and 16th degrees, very cold in the water though…
Car also turned 240 000 km…
